Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf

You’ve probably heard this song. Have you ever wondered what those guys looked like? Here’s a live performance from around the time the song was recorded. Like all classics, there’s something about the lyrics that says something about people that keeps resonating with us over generations.

This song about the freedom of the open road has been the biker anthem ever since it was used as the theme song of Easy Rider. Ironically, John Kay, the singer, has never ridden a motorcycle or even driven a car, because he’s been legally blind all his life. But he knows something of the thrill of freedom, and the lengths people will go to to get it. He’s a refugee from East Germany, who escaped over the Berlin Wall with his mother when he was 5 years old– despite being legally blind.
