At first this looks like eight cool guys on a stage having fun playing music. But think about what the world outside the video was like back then, in 1980. This was in the aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement, and the end of the disco era. Eight cool guys put what a lot of people were feeling into words.
“There’s a party going on right here/ A celebration to last throughout the years/ So bring your good times and you laughter too/ We’re gonna celebrate your party with you.” Eight cool Black guys played a song for everyone to dance to. Diverse people whose ancestors might’ve hated each other all singing along and dancing to the same song is a simple way for everyone to see how everyone else feels about what the song is about. It’s essentially a pow wow with electric guitars.
