What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes

Here’s an anthem of the modern feminist movement. It has 1.6 billion views now. A lot of them are mine. I guess I’m not the only one who’s been looking for some encouragement these past few years!

On the artistic side… Have you ever heard a song you liked on the radio so many times you learned all the words and then suddenly realized you’d never seen the video? By the time I saw the video it looked to me just like what the song sounded like.

It’s a song by a woman about how frustrated she is with the world, and how she keeps a positive attitude and keeps pushing forward. The video adds her three bandmates to that story, even though the only words any of them sing are backup vocals in the choruses.

The video is made up of scenes of the four of them, showing new ways of looking at ordinary things. On one level, it’s four friends helping each other turn their frustration into entertainment to keep them motivated. On another level, turning frustration into entertainment to keep people motivated is the whole point of the song. On another level, showing people ordinary things in new ways is the whole point of the feminist movement.
