Ani DiFranco invented her own genre of folk-punk back in 1990. She started her own record label to produce her music. Today she has 32 albums out.
“Buildings and bridges are made to bend in the wind…” This song about adaptability. And relationships. And about people meeting each other in the first place. And about people finding the balance between how much they’re willing to adapt to each other and how much they should stay focused on what they want.
When you’re young you can get into relationships that you like at first, but end up adapting to each other too much. Getting into the relationship is a big step for both of you, and adapting to each other is a lot of small steps. But eventually you can end up in a relationship that neither of you would’ve wanted if it started out that way, and really the only thing holding your relationship together anymore is your memories of how good it used to feel.
If you’ve already been through a relationship, or a few, like that, you have higher standards on the kinds of relationships you want to get into. If someone thinks they’re offering you a relationship you should want, but you can already tell that you don’t, even if the other person means well, you’ll seem aloof to them for reasons they can’t understand.
